Today, we're speaking with Valeriia Baranova, a professional tattoo artist and member of the Global Tattoo Artists Association. Known for her refined technique and artistic vision, Valeriia brings a unique perspective to the world of tattooing. In this conversation, she shares her insights into the creative journey behind each piece, her inspiration as an artist, and how modern trends are shaping the future of the tattoo industry.
What inspired you to become a tattoo artist?
— Bringing my own artistic style into tattooing and seeing people proudly wear my designs motivated me to become a tattoo artist.
What’s your favorite part of the tattooing process—sketching, inking, or the client reaction?
— I enjoy drawing a design and watching how it transforms on the skin, taking on new colors and meaning.
How would you describe your tattoo style?
— My tattoo style is refined fine lines with a focus on femininity.
What’s the most challenging tattoo you’ve ever done?
— The most challenging tattoo I’ve ever done was a full back botanical design in one session.
How do you make sure your clients are comfortable during the tattoo process?
— I ensure my clients are comfortable by maintaining clear communication, creating a relaxed atmosphere, and checking in with them regularly throughout the session.
Do you think tattoos have a deeper meaning for people, or are they just an art form?
— I believe tattoos are an art form, and it’s not necessary to imbue them with deep meaning; it’s better to highlight the body’s anatomy.
What’s the longest tattoo session you've ever had?
— The longest session lasted about 7 hours, and I believe the session should be comfortable for both the artist and the client.
Do you have any tattoo artists who inspire you or whose work you admire?
— I draw inspiration from nature in my work.
Can you tell us about a memorable or meaningful tattoo you’ve done for someone?
— One memorable tattoo I did was for my mom. I decorated her arm with her favorite flowers and added a phrase hidden in an abstract design, which held special meaning for her.
What’s the most unusual or unexpected tattoo request you’ve ever received?
— I also did a tattoo on the armpit in the shape of a chicken’s foot.
Do you see tattoos as an evolving art form, and if so, how do you think the industry will change in the next decade?
— Yes, tattoos are definitely an evolving art form. As the industry grows, we will likely see advancements in technology, allowing for even more intricate and detailed designs. There will be an increased focus on customization and personalization, as people continue to seek unique and meaningful tattoos. I also believe that the stigma around tattoos will continue to fade, and the art form will become even more accepted and integrated into mainstream culture. In the next decade, I foresee more collaboration between tattoo artists and other forms of visual art, blending different styles and techniques.
